22 July 2001
Barnsley Custom & Classic Bike Show.
Barnsley RUFC Ground,
Shaw Lane,
Barnsley.

The show is one of the top one-day events on the motorcycling calendar. Over 200 motorcycles in the show with hundreds more to be seen in the car parks. The event features live music, trade stalls, kiddies rides, all day bar and excellent hot and cold food. A great family event run by local people for local people. Proceeds donated to charity.

Well that was what the local advertising said, and I have to agree. What a great day out. It made a change from camping out over the weekend - no sore backs eh? This was also the debut of my new camera, so I am expecting that the piccies should look lot better. It's only a 75 mile trip from Leicester to Barnsley and I arrived to an already well stocked showground at about 11.15am.

Note the head's on the wrong way!I paid my £2.50 and went off to park and register for the show. This was the second year I have been (the previous time was in the car 'cos you can't carry two passengers on, even, my bike) and the organisation was still very good. Even pieces of wood were given out to put your kick stand on - we don't want to sink into the ground do we? There were many familiar bikes parked up - Vic Jefford's very low Suzuki that won at this years Rock & Blues, along with Tribal Vision and Curly's Joker. Seems I must be on a Custom Show circus round or summat. Anyhow, I gave my bike a bit of a polish and went off in search of greatness in metal.

Good old Helen cleaning Tribal Vision again..I noticed that Mick Clarke's partner, Helen, was giving Tribal Vision a damn good seeing to with her polishing kit. If only I could find somebody to do that for me (fna fna).

a fine V6 Capri trike There were some fantastic machines there. Notably, a V6 single seat trike (remember I don't particularly care for trikes!), and a 1972 Honda 750 chop with some beautiful engraving and gold plate.

Cor wot a porkerPlenty of Custom Street Fighters were there along with a judicious amount of Harley's in various disguises. Classic British Bikes were represented too. There was no prize class for Paintwork, which was a shame as there was some fantastic artwork on display - some humorous - some tribal and even a magical Queen tribute bike.

Half of the ScallywagsThe Scallywags were the band for the afternoon's entertainment, and they played various rock covers through the day. Most of the crowd sat down to watch them at one time or another. Some of the guests played cricket with a walking stick and a pink fluffy teddy bear (which didn't stay in one piece too long - you murderous beasts), others just lay down and slept for a while.

Teas, coffees, burgers and steak sarnis were all at very reasonable prices and the bar kept pouring those beers. I wish I could have had one beer but... just teas for me please. The weather seemed determined to pour all over us, with some blooming great big clouds staying right above us. This did send quite a few people off home early but, thankfully, the rain stayed off.

Had a long day? A fine Ducati lowrider / chop

At about 3.30, the prize giving started. All the trophies were presented by one of the Back Street Heroes freelance photographers, Louise Limb. The compere had said that if everything went to plan then he would bare his butt which, of course, was a good bet on his part 'cos when did you ever see a presentation go smoothly?

Approximately 2500 people attended with 184 bikes in the show.

Here's a list of the classes and winners: Note Vic Jefford won no less than four trophies today plus £100 cash, with his absolutely fabulous Suzuki Lowrider, and well deserved too.

A quick note from the organisers:

Thanks to:

Stone Cold Dave Sykes ( a man couldn't wish for a better best friend), Sandra Cooper, Tracey Myers, Mick & Jill Marshall, John & Linda Hamilton, Louise Limb ( T Shirt design & untold help), B.R.U.F.C, Dave (as long as its still warm) Taylor, The band (Scallywag), Ado, Brownie & the army of volunteers who gave up there time on the day. And a big thank you to everybody who continues to support the event without whom the event would not be the success it is.

The dream goes on........... Roll on the 25th anniversary, well be there. If you enjoyed the event please tell a friend, if not tell us. barnsleybikeshow@supanet.com

Where next? Well on my calendar at the moment it's The Blast At Rockingham Raceway and  then VSOC Fourgasm Rally at the end of August, see you there? Maybe not  with the bike as it's just been rear ended (5.30pm 31st July 2001) so there's a lot of work to do with insurers, body shops and custom painters, Oooh! Grrr!
