Rockingham

The Blast at Rockingham was held on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th August at the Rockingham Motor Speedway in  Corby, Northamptonshire. Rockingham is the UK's newest motorsport facility, and when we got there we could see it was absolutely huge. The all seater grandstands tower over the 1.5 mile oval track, from where you can see the whole area - but you'll need binoculars or bionic eyes if you want to see really well. The Blast was organised in association with Two Wheels Only, a new bike magazine, and The Edge Rider Assessment

We turned up on the Sunday after a deluge of rain the night before, which is one of the reasons, I suppose, that so many people seemed to stay away. It was a shame as the day turned out to be very warm and mostly dry. The day was based on the advertising blurb of the seven deadly sins (hence their logo above): 1) Pride  2) Avarice  3) Lust  4) Anger  5) Gluttony  6) Envy  7) Sloth and I reckon all of these can be attributed to most bikers in one way or another - just think about it for a while, but not too long now.

Both days had pretty much the same deal in entertainment, with the Red Bull Freestyle Supercross show (bloody brilliant). These guys were leaping at least 50 foot into the air, barely holding onto their bikes. I wish I knew how to do that with a Wild Star!! Various styles were displayed to the crowd, such as Heart Attack, Lazy Boy and  Superman.

Craig Jones and Kevin Carmichael showed off some great stunt work in the pit lane. Craig even managed to get the local bikercop to have a go on the front. Wouldn't you love to do that to your local bobby?

The usual smokin' o' tyres was done, but I'd never seen it whilst balancing the bike on its back. And when he finished doing it with another bike he just left it standing on its back tyre - well until it fell over, ha ha.

There were attempts at a 200mph world speed record on the circuit, but the last I heard, it hadn't gone. About 180mph I think. The guys were trying really hard, so hard in fact that this chap had burnt away the rear part of his right boot!

While there were a good few stands inside the paddock area, there were also a lot of stands outside the track area, which unfortunately didn't get very many people visiting at all. They even had an off road circuit for the kids. Meanwhile on the track side, once you had completed the Edge assessment, you could have a go on the infield track, which is a great twisty circuit. Only a couple of bikes went off over the weekend, but the riders were, thankfully, all ok.

We had to pop over to the Harley stand as the new VRod was there. Very impressive.

Also, Carl Fogarty was out signing autographs on books, programs, T Shirts and even hats. Who do you think got the better deal?

Oh and we can't forget the girls, without whom, my day would not have been complete. I thank you...

Where next? Well on my calendar it's the  VSOC Fourgasm Rally at the end of August, see you there? I'll be on a Suzuki 1200 Bandit or, maybe, the car - depends if the Bandit needs its service by then.
